9/18/89 synd.

Notes:

Major flaw: "perpetual treasure hunt" of Pi-Rats (ludicrous, hard to buy) - as flimsy a plot device as Monty's attempt at a pirate disguise and Zipper's cheesy parrot disguise.

Just as serious: not clear who/what RR are in this "first" episode. (Cf. Charles Solomon confusion - are they adventurers? Detectives? Thieves?) Would have been better had "To the Rescue" ran first.  Still wouldn't have helped this ep too much.

Doesn't help that the RR get involved by accident - not good for "active heroes" such as the Rangers are supposed to be.

Dale's character traits of sloppiness, obsession with "media images" of adventure ("Treasure hunt!!") already evident.

Pi-Rats not such bad characters (esp. Jolly Roger), just not used to best advantage. Compare use of Pi-rats in Scott Savedra's "Lair of the Pi-Rats" in CDRR comic #3 - takes bare bones of this episode but eliminates silly "perpetual treasure hunt" in favor of linking tale with a bigger story.

[Tad Stones claimed that the Rangers lived in a city on the West Coast, but with a "feel" of New York. This episode supports the West Coast locale, as when the Rangers are being towed away in the garbage scow, the Golden Gate Bridge is seen in one of the background shots. - MP]
