9/21/89 synd.

BIG debit in my mind: obsessed Chip, a bit out of character.  He's a student of deduction, OK, but is this going a bit too far?  Acts a bit like Dale in "Flash" et al. here (though of course more subdued).  Also, this "Jones" obsession never shows up again (contrast recurring theme of Dale's media obsession).

Rangers taken out of usual milieu, plopped down in vaguely British locale without adequate explanation.  Not last time this would happen.

McDuff has Liverpudlian Beatle accent -- first glimpsed in the highwayman character Arwillian in "Gummis"' "Crimson Avenger".

In a real puzzler: the sheriff looks thoroughly American and has an American accent!

Characterizations of Roger and Lord Howie simplistic -- only McDuff has any semblance of depth (loyalty, bravery).

[Titles of Jones mysteries perforated with puns. "The Case of the Doctored Watson" and "The Case of the Conan Doily" two best examples.

Chip's love of Jones mysteries would go on to be a staple of his personality in fanfics, such as in "Food Fight" and "Rhyme and Reason". - MP]
